Jeans, a hoodie and t-shirt – in what world does this constitute a fashion collection, with a price tag of $120 for a plain white cotton tee? In the world in which Kanye West’s marketing team decides it is so.
And apparently they aren’t alone; the ridiculously over-priced shirt has sold out since its launch last week.
This is branding at its finest – when your customers or fans are so infatuated with your brand that they’ll buy just about anything associated with your name. It’s why celebrity endorsements and movie star ad talent bring in the big bucks. People buy the brand.
And while the “Hip Hop T” may be an example of branding taken to a ridiculous extreme, we appreciate Colbert’s wry take on the whole fashionable affair.
